Last year's first place winners are ineligible to compete for placement in the same category, but may participate this year for judges’comments. A non-refundable fee is required for each category in which the applicant wishes to compete. assigned audition time/s via e-mail or telephone. Students and accompanists will be notified of their times by their teachers. Contestants should arrive at the registration table in Cooper Hall on the Point Loma Nazarene University campus 30 minutes prior to their audition time. Latecomers may be excluded from competition. After registration, NATS members will be available to help students locate audition rooms, practice rooms, restroom facilities, etc. Please be aware that space and time constraints allow for only a few minutes of warm-up time for each contestant. It is strongly suggested that your students arrive warmed-up and well-rehearsed with their accompanist. Guests are welcome and encouraged to observe the competition where the capacity of the room permits.
1. ALL selections must be performed from memory, including selections from oratorios or cantatas. 2. Musical Theater selections must be chosen from Stage Musicals not from Motion Pictures. Example: Songs from Kiss Me Kate would be permitted, even though there is a motion picture of the musical. Songs from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s i.e. “Moon River” would not be permitted. PRE-COLLEGE DIVISIONS IA (ages 15-16) AND IB (ages 17-18) Prepare THREE selections from any of the following genres: 1. Aria from an oratorio or operetta (no more than one) 2. Art song and /or Folk song 3. Musical Theatre (no more than two) NOTE: The choice of an opera aria is not an option in this division, however certain Handel arias, or selections from 24 Italian Songs and Arias may be appropriate. CLASSICAL DIVISION IIA (ages 18-20) Prepare THREE selections from any of the following genres: 1. Aria from an oratorio or operetta (no more than one) 2. An aria from opera (no more than one) 3. Art song At least three languages should be represented, including one selection in English. NOTE: Selections from Musical Theatre are not permitted in this category. CLASSICAL DIVISION IIB (ages 21-23) Prepare FIVE selections from any of the following genres: 1. Aria from an oratorio or operetta (no more than one) 2. An aria from opera (no more than one) 3. Art song At least three languages should be represented, including one selection in English. NOTE: Selections from Musical Theatre are not permitted in this category.
